What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a general term that refers to inflammation and pain in joints. These symptoms occur for a number of reasons. Joint inflammation is commonly caused by injuries, infections, repetitive overuse, and certain diseases. Arthritis is usually a chronic disease. However, some types of this condition can be cured. These are typically the types that are caused by infection.
Symptoms:
- Stiffness and pain in the joint
- Swelling or redness in the affected area
- Reduced range of motion, stiffness
- Warmth, increased blood flow to the area
Treatment:
When most people think of arthritis treatment, they think of medications. However, this is only a small part of an effective regimen. There are important lifestyle changes which can have a much more significant impact on arthritis than medications can.
- Moderate, low impact exercise (swimming is great)
- Weight loss will lessen impact on your joints, easing pain
- Relaxing and flexibility-building exercises, such as yoga
Supplements are also proving to be an effective way to treat arthritis. Chondroitin and Glucosamine are two popular choices. Both these supplements contribute to the health of your cartilage. Healthy cartilage acts as a buffer in our joints, preventing bones from chaffing together.
Medications:
There has recently been a large amount of controversy over the safety of popular treatment options for arthritis. Until there is more evidence available on this subject, we do not feel comfortable advising our visitors on drugs to treat this condition. Talk to your doctor to find out which medications will work best for you.
